Iron is known to carry oxygen to the lungs and to cells as well. An inadequate intake of iron in the diet and poor iron absorption leads to lack of energy and tiredness.
Red meat has iron that can be easily absorbed but that should not necessarily push you to eat meat as the only source.
Other good options are sukuma wiki, broccoli, lentils and beans, pumpkin seeds, dried apricots, brown rice, eggs and cashew nuts to name a few.
Note that these foods aren't readily absorbed but one can boost absorption by adding foods rich in Vitamin C in the same meal. This is done by lightly cooking your iron~rich veggies or having a small glass of freshly squeezed orange juice with your meal.
