Sweet granadilla

This type of fruit is one that interests many fruit lovers. Other names it goes by include; sugar fruit, yellow passion fruit, sweet passion fruit. It is often overlooked but it is full of nutritious and sweet goodness.

They are oblong to oval shaped with a hollow, light-weight feel as well. They also have a bright sweet and tangy fruity flavor with tropical and floral undertones. In addition, it is available all round- a bonus factor.

Granadillas can be grown indoors under moderate sunlight and its flowers are at its best when its roots are constricted in a container. Another factor is that ,it needs rich, loamy soil , even moisture and frequent feeding for optimal growth.

It is filled with a variety of antioxidants which include; protein, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, iron, vitamins A,B2,C,EK as well as fiber to regulate the digestive tract.

Sweet passions are eaten fresh by cracking it open and the pulp eaten. The content is eaten using a spoon.


Ways to eat the pulp;

  • Poured over some yogurt as fresh topping.
  • Mixed with fruit salad or in dressings
  • Can be juiced and strained mixing sweet liquid into fruit drinks, cocktails and smoothies.
  • Can be combined with orange and tangerine juice to create a sweet and tart breakfast juice.
  • Pulp made into jams and marmalades.
  • Used to flavor ice cream, pies, Pavlova and cake frosting.

These taste of goodness pair well with strawberries, blueberries, mascarpone, tangerines , blood oranges , limes and yogurt.

When storing the pulp, it can keep from 1-2 weeks when stored at room temperature an about 2-4 weeks when stored in the refrigerator.
