Flaxseed/ Linseeds/ Mbegu za Kitani

Flaxseed is one of my favorite 'seeds' to use in juices, smoothies and even as an additional ingredient in salads. I have to admit they are chewy but I love eating them, because of their high content in dietary fiber and fatty acids. They have been used for thousands of years as folk medicine, especially in Chinese and Egyptian societies: The seeds contain soluble fiber and oil. Flaxseed oil contains the essential omega-3 fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid. 


Flaxseed come from their parent plant the flax, also known as, linseed and are grown in temperate climate all over the world with the food and fiber crop intent. Textile is made from flax and in known as linen, used for construction of undergarments and table linen.


Of particular interest to us, is the food part of the flax; the oil is known as linseed oil, obtained from its nutritious seeds known as flaxseeds/linseeds. The oil is used as, a therapy essential oil, and also as a salad dressing in our home salad recipes. 


Flaxseed is also available in form of powder, tablets, capsules, and flour, in addition to the oil and whole seed.


People use it as a dietary supplement to prevent constipation, diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease, cancer, and several other conditions.

Note, because of the high fiber content. It is advisable to gradually introduce flaxseeds in your diet especially for people who are not used to consuming high fiber foods diets. It is more fun to be creative with the seeds during preparation, as you’re likely to come up with very interesting recipes, plus other ways to incorporate them into the diet.
